Understanding Pitch and the Music Alphabet
Introduction to Pitch
In music, pitch refers to the quality of a sound that allows us to classify it as relatively high or low. It is the frequency of the sound waves that makes us perceive a note as higher or lower when compared to another. The faster the wave vibrations, the higher the frequency and the higher the pitch.
It is important to understand if a sound has a higher or lower pitch than the other, both in musical notation and when hearing the sounds. You will train both with notation exercises and ear training exercises during this course.
The Music Alphabet
The music alphabet is made up of the first seven letters of the alphabet: A through G (A B C D E F G). These letters represent specific pitches. After G, the sequence repeats starting again at A but at a higher pitch.
The Treble Clef
The treble clef, also known as the G clef, spirals around the second line from the bottom of the staff. This line represents the pitch “G” above middle C (one of the central notes on the piano). It is commonly used for high-pitched instruments like the violin, flute, and the higher ranges of the piano.

Notation on the Staff: music alphabet on the treble clef
With the treble clef in place, notes are placed on the lines and spaces. Each line and space corresponds to a letter of the music alphabet:
- Lines (from bottom to top): E, G, B, D, F

- Spaces (from bottom to top): F, A, C, E

A usual mnemonic to remember the line notes is: Every Good Boy Does Fine
And for the spaces: Face
Applying the Music Alphabet to your instrument
To apply the music alphabet to an instrument, you must first learn where each letter corresponds to a note on the instrument. On the piano, middle C is often the starting point for locating other notes.
